It comes up in nearly every corridor conversation. Someone has a job offer in Indianapolis and a spouse at Purdue, or the reverse, and they want to know whether the drive is survivable.

Indiana publishes the answer, and it is not an estimate. Every IT-40 return records the county you live in and the county you work in. The Indiana Business Research Center compiles it annually.

What the returns show

Of 114,548 working Tippecanoe County residents in tax year 2024, here is how many worked in the Indianapolis metro counties:

Fourteen people in a thousand. And only 6,465 Tippecanoe residents work outside the county at all. The other 108,083 live and work inside it.

Where Tippecanoe's commuters actually come from

The traffic runs the other direction, and it is rural rather than metropolitan. The counties sending the most workers into Tippecanoe are Carroll (2,938), Clinton (2,448), White (2,142) and Benton (1,532). More people drive in from Carroll County alone than drive from all of Tippecanoe to Marion, Boone and Hamilton combined.

What this means if you are deciding

If your plan is to buy in Lafayette or West Lafayette and drive to an Indianapolis office five days a week, you would be joining a group of roughly one thousand people statewide. That is not proof it cannot work. It is a strong signal that very few people who try it keep doing it.

What is common along this corridor is different, and it is worth naming clearly: households move between the two ends. People take a job at one end and relocate rather than commute. Others are obligated at both ends for a season, whether that is a student, a project or a parent, and treat it as temporary rather than permanent.

Those are different problems, and they have different answers. If you are weighing one of them, that is a conversation worth having before you start touring houses.
