A job in Indianapolis and a home in Lafayette can put work and household commitments in different counties. Indiana's tax-return data provide a measure of how many people report that arrangement, while the experience of the drive depends on the route and schedule.
What the commuting record shows
The data identify counties of residence and work, rather than the experience of making a particular drive. They are useful context for planning a commute, alongside the location and attendance requirements of the job.
Indiana publishes the answer, and it is not an estimate. Every IT-40 return records the county you live in and the county you work in. The Indiana Business Research Center compiles it annually.
What the returns show
Of 114,548 working Tippecanoe County residents in tax year 2024, here is how many worked in the Indianapolis metro counties:
Fourteen people in a thousand. And only 6,465 Tippecanoe residents work outside the county at all. The other 108,083 live and work inside it.
Where Tippecanoe's commuters actually come from
The traffic runs the other direction, and it is rural rather than metropolitan. The counties sending the most workers into Tippecanoe are Carroll (2,938), Clinton (2,448), White (2,142) and Benton (1,532). More people drive in from Carroll County alone than drive from all of Tippecanoe to Marion, Boone and Hamilton combined.
What this means if you are deciding
A plan to live in Lafayette or West Lafayette and drive to an Indianapolis office five days a week should be tested against the actual route and work schedule. The roughly one thousand people in the cited Marion County count provide context, but the table cannot show whether they drive daily or how long they keep the arrangement.
Some households need to be near work at both ends for a period, while others are considering a relocation. Those are different scheduling questions to resolve before choosing which homes to tour.
Those are different problems, and they have different answers. If you are weighing one of them, that is a conversation worth having before you start touring houses.
