Start with the places your household needs to reach and the work the home needs to do. Check those requirements against specific addresses before building a shortlist for the trip.
Where is the job, and where is everything else?
The state's tax-return figures record 993 people working in Marion County out of 114,548 working Tippecanoe residents. That provides context for an Indianapolis-to-Lafayette commuting plan. The route, workplace and household's acceptable driving time still need individual review.
Which side of which line?
School assignment is decided by lines that do not follow town names. Whitestown students attend Zionsville schools or Lebanon schools depending on the township. A West Lafayette mailing address can sit in a different school district entirely. A relocating family that has picked a town has not yet picked a school, and the difference between two houses a mile apart can be the whole reason for the move.

Check the population behind the statistic
Citywide figures can combine households with quite different circumstances. Purdue's student population affects West Lafayette's overall statistics, while a county median in Indianapolis combines many neighborhoods. Check the population and geography behind a figure before using it to choose a location.
What does the house need to do?
List how the home will be used: working from home, visits from family, time in the yard and the use of stairs now and in ten years. Those requirements help turn an unfamiliar map into a more practical property search.
What is the town about to become?
Every community I cover is changing, and the direction matters more than the snapshot. Westfield is the fastest-growing city in the state. West Lafayette is about to gain a second anchor employer. Lebanon has a campus under construction. Whitestown has grown fivefold since 2010. A relocating buyer is buying the next ten years of a place, not the current listing photos, and the towns' trajectories are public.
